5 reasons to celebrate this week:
1. my dad & sister, and the dogs, moved back into their home on Wednesday afternoon after 48 hours of evacuation. their home was spared - sooty, but spared. we are incredibly lucky.
[not so for so many, many others, though. please continue to keep the residents of Southern California in your thoughts.]
2. the Red Sox are in the World Series [which you already know, because your very use of the intarwebs facilitating your reading of this post means you, in all likelihood, do not live under a rock] and, as if that weren't exciting enough for Doug: he and his brother are going to Denver tomorrow to see Games 3 and 4! and they've got really sweet seats.
3. Doug's birthday celebration Wednesday night was a blast! the two of us went to andina for dinner, and then met up with friends at New Old Lompoc to toast another year of Doug [and watch Game 1, of course].
4. my mom arrives in Portland in less than an hour! she's spending the weekend here before a work-related meeting at OHSU on Monday. [i'm so dragging her to Ikea.] in honor of her visit, my i'm entertaining for the first time in my new apartment tonight. looking forward to introducing my mom to my pdx friends over pasta & wine.
5. the weather here's been gorgeous for the past few days and is predicted to remain that way through the weekend. the air is crisp, the sun is out, the trees are all shades of red and orange and yellow, and the leaves sound crunchy when you step on them. autumn is the best time of year.
have a fantastic weekend.

Oh, Sharon. I am so glad to hear about your family...what a great blessing.
Autumn is such a wonderful time of year...so beautiful. I wish it lasted longer here in Fresno.

oh my - i too am thrilled to hear that your folks' place in san diego was spared. my dad reported much the same from orange county (where the stakes were far lower for most, but i was still concerned) - his place is a bit grey, but that's the extent of things.
we're pulling for the sox out here as well - both because they're near and dear to my harvard peeps and because the yankees are so much fun to hate (second on my list only to usc, and stanford took a very satisfying whack at them a few weeks ago, so i'm satisfied on that front). i discovered when boston took the series a few years ago that they always win when i'm sewing, so i guess i'll be crafting like a champ for the next week or so. need any felt animals?

uh, to clarify the yankees thing a bit: it's a the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend thing.
for rhetorical purposes, we'll ignore the fact that rudy giuliani is also rooting for the sox (HUGE news out here - it's still all over local TV).

I'm possibly a giant. Look at how daintily I have to hold that diminutive pint glass.

glad to hear your family's home was spared. I was torn for who to root for in the world series. Long time Bo-sox fan, long-time Colorado resident. :) in the end - I win either way. hope your dinner party was fabulous.
